Winter has settled in, which means cold weather and long nights. You may be spending more time in bed, keeping warm under the covers, so now is the perfect time to do some updates to stay cozy and incorporate the joy of the holidays.
Do some cleaning
Most people spring clean, but it’s a good idea to do some fall cleaning as well. You’ll be spending more time with your home, so get it ready for you to settle in. You spend more time in your bed than anywhere else, which means the bedroom is a good place to start. Here are some top tips:
- Clean your vents – your heater is going to be blowing constantly, so make sure it’s not sending dust and debris your way.
- Dust – more than just the regular surfaces. Clean out the dust that gets into the nooks and crannies of your bed, too. You don’t need to be inhaling those particles while you sleep.
- Vacuum – more than the floor. You can cut some corners by using the vacuum on drapes and upholstery (especially if you have an upholstered bed). This is also a great way to clean your mattress and box spring.
- Freshen your pillow - pillows need to be cleaned twice a year, so spring and fall are perfect times. Check the tag to see what kind of washing your pillow can handle.
- Wash your bedding – Whether you keep the same bedding all year round or change out for seasonally warmer options, make sure you’re washing all your bedding periodically. This includes sheets, but also all your blankets, duvet covers, and mattress protectors. These quickly get full of everything you shed during sleep.
Update for added warmth
Make some changes to ensure that you’re warm no matter what winter brings. First, focus on the bed. Add layers of soft blankets, throws, and pillows to the bed (and even the rest of the room). Bring out the flannel sheets and pajamas. You might even want to think about an upholstered headboard, which adds a little extra softness and comfort.
Block up drafts, which can occur around doors and windows, but also pop up around other openings like light fixtures and outlets.
If you have wood, tile, or thin carpet, try adding some small, thick rugs to the floor to help hold in heat. Heavier curtains can also help.
Warmth is about more than just the fabrics you choose. Rich colors can create a cozy feeling, so choosing shades that relax you and evoke comfort can add a little extra touch. The same can be said about scents. A candle or diffuser with a warm smell can relax you and make you feel warm, which leads to better sleep. While studies have shown that lavender, vanilla, valerian, and jasmine can help enhance your slumber, you can choose anything that makes you comfortable. Scents evoke emotions, so any smells that make you feel relaxed and comforted can set the stage for great sleep. Holiday smells are full of those feelings, so try vanilla, cinnamon, or any number of baked good flavors.
Dress it up
Neutral and calming colors are good for a bedroom, but you can add some color for the holidays. A few pops can put you in the spirit of the season, without spending a lot of money. Some of the throws or pillows you add can be in seasonal shades, and you might choose holiday themes for the candle holders or scent diffusers. There can be too much of a good thing – too many new things can be over-stimulating and take away the feeling of familiarity that helps your body know it’s safe to relax into deep sleep.
